On June 23, 2005 the GPSC an all-services distributed overlay as the relief method for the 706 area code. The overlay plan means that the new 762 area code share the same geographic boundary as the existing 706 area code. Existing phone numbers and local calling areas won’t change, but it will be necessary to dial the entire 10-digit telephone number for local calling.

Permissive ten-digit dialing will be in effect from September 1, 2005 until April 2, 2006.

Mandatory 10-digit dialing will be required beginning April 3, 2006.

Assignment of the new area code will start as soon as May 2006.

The test number, for verifying equipment and carrier compatibility, is 762-222-7777 inside the Watkinsville calling area or 1-762-222-7777 if outside the Watkinsville calling area.
